Things to Do in San Jose, CA
Known as the capital of California's Silicon Valley, San Jose is the 10th largest city in the US and, to its credit, was the fourth safest big city in the US in 2008-09. Founded in 1777 as El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, this dynamic 21st century city is now the headquarters of many manufacturing companies and industry leaders. Whether you find yourself in San Jose on business or pleasure, there are plenty of things to keep you busy during your stay.
Downtown San Jose
The downtown area of San Jose is relatively compact and easy to get around, radiating out from Santa Clara Street (which runs east-west) and First Street (which runs north-south).
Downtown San Jose is home to many office headquarters as well as the San Jose State University campus. Appropriate to the area, the Tech Museum of Innovation on South Market Street ably demonstrates how our lives are affected by technology, perhaps more than we realize.
Those with a penchant for the Arts may prefer the neighboring San Jose Museum of Art with its contemporary collection, which includes West Coast artists along with national and international pieces. In complete contrast, the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles is the first such museum in the US.
One place in downtown San Jose that you won't want to miss is the City Hall, with its landmark free-standing glass rotunda. Pick up a self-guided tour or join the docent-led tour which takes place every Tuesday at noon.
Just across the SR-87, the Guadalupe River Trail is a great resource for getting outside and stretching your legs in the generally sunny climate. The River Park is also home to a very unusual attraction - the world's largest outdoor Monopoly board. It is fun to visit and makes a great photo opportunity!
